Entry 263: Avengers #44 and New Avengers #33 Covers

This is my connecting cover image for Avengers #44 and New Avengers #33.

Jonathan Hickman is bringing both these series to an end in these issues and I was asked back to do the final covers. Having started Hickman's Avengers off with my connecting covers for issues 1,2,&3, and having drawn covers for both these series' I found the idea of returning for the last covers to be an appealing idea. Of course, I told them that we had to get Justin Ponsor back for the colors, to really give it that bookend quality.

At first the direction for this cover was really vague. All I knew was that it was these two dudes fighting with the worlds colliding and Captain Universe in the background.

Here's my first take at the idea. This initial image was not right and I knew it from the beginning, but sometimes you have to get the wrong idea out to see what's wrong with it.

Entry 251: Avengers #35

No Amnia Cycle this week. I've been busy on other things. Hopefully I'll be back on track next week. In the meantime, here's an entry about Avengers #35.

Since my work on Avengers and Infinity I've been trying to focus on Shield, Amnia Cycle, and my Edge of Spider-Verse issue, but there have been several instances of the editors of the Avengers comics asking me to come back to do stuff. I've been asked to do things from whole story arks to single covers. Most of these job offers I've turned down because I've wanted to stay focused on the things I mentioned above. But recently they asked me to do some fill in pages. It was only three pages, they seemed simple enough, and I felt bad for continually saying no. So I said yes.

The 3 pages were the first pages for Avengers #35 which came out a few weeks back.
Here are my pencils/"inks"

I was right in the middle of my Spider-verse issue when I did these. The pages were fairly easy. I didn't ink them. I did tight pencils then adjusted them and created all the space stuff in photoshop.  It didn't take to long, but the moment I was done I got an email from the Spider-verse editor wondering how my Spider-verse issue was going. Turns out, I thought I had more time on my spider-verse issue than I actually did.

These three pages took valuable time out of my Spider-verse issue. I met my deadline on the Edge of Spider-Verse issue, but it was not easy. I'll talk more about that in a different entry. Ultimately, I kind wish I hadn't taken on these pages… Oh well.

Here are my layouts followed by colors by Frank Martin.

Entry 236: The New Avengers 20 & 21 COVERS

Hellooooooo, readers!

How are you? How's it going? You know I feel like we never talk anymore. I'm posting Amnia Cycle pages so much these days I never take the time to post other things, and just get cazh. You know?

…Wait. is that how you abbreviate the word casual? "Cazh"? Is it Cajj? Damn it. It's hard to be so cazh when I'm fussing over the more casual spelling of the word casual.

Anyway. About the cover-- Doctor Strange done gone kilt them people.

Entry 223: NEW AVENGERS 18-19 Covers

I am super good at blogging, guys! How many blogs have I blogged this past week? Like 3 or something? I am blogging it up! I know you are all on Facebook and Twitter acting like stupid idiots, but look at me, blogging it up old school. This is where it's at, man. So, before you go back to tweeting your fool head off, why don't you relax and enjoy the blog.

The New Avengers #18 and 19 have conjoined covers, and you guessed it, they were drawn by me. (Am I becoming a go-to conjoined cover guy? Do not pigeon hole me, comics industry!)

Wanna see my sketch and the colored version? Well here.

Entry 221: Avengers AI cover

I was just updating my About Page. Have you guys ever checked out my About Page? If you haven't, you should. I have listed every single thing that I have ever worked on on there, and beside each thing I have provided a link to every blog entry having to do with that thing. It's the ultimate guid to my work and this blog.

So anyway, I was just updating it and I realized that I never did a blog entry about my variant cover to AVENGERS AI #1, which I did back in March of 2013. Like a year ago! So, here I am fixing that oversight. I may be a year late but, guys, check it out. I did a variant cover for AVENGERS AI #1.

Here's my sketch for this cover. As is the case most of the time, I think the sketch is the best version of the cover.

So the idea with Avengers AI is probably obvious. They are robotic artificial intelligences. It's a team of super androids. So I decided to create some kind of circuit board/inside a robot brain thing.

Here's a look at Marte Gracia's colors.

As far as I know this was the final color version of this cover, but I think they ended up using an earlier, less final, version when they printed it. I have no idea why, it was probably a mistake or a miscommunication. It's a shame because I like this version better than what was printed.

At any rate, here it is just for you, my readers.

Entry 210: Infinity #6 FILL-IN pages

That is a page from Marvel's INFINITY #6. By me and Justin Ponsor.

Originally I wasn't supposed to do any pages for Infinity #6. It was supposed to be an all Jim Cheung issue, but, as you know, comics are a lot of work to draw. Jim wasn't going to meet the deadline, so they asked me if I could do it. Wanting to keep the art duties in the Infinity family, I said I would do what I could.

I did five pages out of like forty-something pages. Seeing as I was doing so few pages in a book full of Jim Cheung art, I decided to abandon my manga inspired layout style and adopt the more restrained "widescreen" layout style that Jim uses. I wanted the reading experience to be a smooth one. To have an abrupt change in page layout for 2 pages here and there would have been jarring. Also, I had a very short amount of time to produce these pages, so doing a more straight forward layout style made things easier.

Here are all of my Infinity #6 pages.

Entry 189: INFINITY #2 is coming!

NO This blog hasn't just become the "Amnia Cycle blog" It hasn't become just the home to one more web-comic you give zero shits about. NO. I'm still doing things you are actually interested in! And one of those things you are interested in--

IS--THE MARVEL INFINITY CROSSOVER EVENT!

How could you not be interested in it? What other crossover events could you possibly be into right now?  NONE! Is the answer.

So, guys, how bout I shut my stinking pie hole for two seconds and make with some preview pages. HUH?

Entry 174: AVENGERS #8 Notes

Avengers #8 is out. I'm sure you all have gotten it and are in the middle of doing your fan recreations of the issue from cover to cover, redrawing everything and rewriting every word as faithfully as possible so as to fully express your love for it...

Isn't that what you guys do with comics that you like?    No?   Well that's what I do.

You guys know about that "Bartkira" project where a bunch of artists are redrawing all of Akira with Simpsons characters? Well, coincidentally, a few years ago I drew "Cailloumu", my recreation of Domu with characters from the Canadian kids show, Caillou. CRAZY Coincidence right?.. (If only you guys knew how lame that would be.)

If you can't tell by the image above, in this post I'm talking about Starbrand! Also I'll be talking a little bit about working with Justin Ponsor.

So get ready and get set...

Entry 171: AVENGERS #7 Notes + ECCC 2013 Commissions

AVENGERS #7-- is there anything I can say about it? Do I have any concept art?

Emerald City Comic Con. I went there. What commissions did I do, and can I show them to you?

Also, LOVE. Is it real, and is there such a thing as a soul mate?

ALL of these questions, and more, will be answered in this blog entry!

So lets get started!

Entry 167: Avengers Covers #11 and #12

Look what I've got!

Two more AVENGERS COVERS!

As usual, Justin Ponsor is killing it on the colors.

I know what you're thinking, "More Avengers covers? Didn't you just do a blog entry that included 3 Avengers covers? And already you have more? What's going on here, Dustin? Is this ALL you draw now? Avengers covers?... I mean, draw something else, man. This whole Avengers cover thing is getting old."

Well guess what-- you're not the boss of me. Okay? You don't tell me what to draw. Marvel does. I am Marvel's dancing monkey NOT YOURS! Okay pal?

Moving on.

Entry 166: Avengers Covers 8,9,10

AVENGERS COVER #9

That's what you are looking at there. Which can mean only one thing-- That's right, it's me Dustin Weaver's blog here again with another BLOG ENTRY! And once again, I've got 3 covers all at once to share with you.

So lets waste no time, and I mean NO time. Let's not spend a split second more than what is necessary and get straight to the art. I mean your time is valuable. My time is valuable. TIME IS MONEY! We'd be stupid idiots to just let it go to waste. I mean we might as well sit around lighting our cigars with one hundred dollar bills. So seriously, everyone, when I say we shouldn't waste any time then I mean we shouldn't waste any time.

Entry 163: Avengers #7

Hi. It's me, Dustin Weaver.
I hope you, the readers of this blog, are having a happy holiday season. As I write this, we're just a few days from it being New Years. So HAPPY NEW YEAR!

If you haven't, well how are you going to know what's going on when it gets to issue 7, the first issue drawn by me... You are planning on getting my issues right? Issues 7-9? If you're not, WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING HERE? This blog is only for people who buy my comics. If you have no intention to buy comics that I draw kindly stop reading and leave. Go and don't let the "back" button hit you on the way out. --All right. Now that they are gone-- Guys, here's a preview of issue 7.

That cover IS a reference to this old ad for Marvel's New Universe back in 1986.

Entry 162: Avengers Covers 4,5,6

Okay! Finally! Covers!

As promised, this is my entry about my covers for Avengers #4,5,and 6. I am a man of my word. Three covers for the price of one blog entry-- What a deal! Is any other comic artist's blog bringing you deals this good? I DON'T THINK SO! I'm practically giving blog content away here. Blogtent.

So yeah! What you see above is my cover for Avengers #5.

And here is cover #4 (without the logo this time) followed by cover #6

Entry 159: Avengers Covers 1,2,3

Welcome, everyone, to another blog entry by me, Dustin Weaver.

If you've looked me up because you saw my Avengers covers and thought, "Who's this jerk?" Well, that jerk is me. Hi. If you thought, "There's only room for one Dustin in comics and that is Dustin Nguyen!" Well, you're half right; there IS only room for one... I'm coming for you Nguyen... And if this post has google-alerted Dustin Nguyen, then hi, Dustin. See my last post for an explanation.

And that's what I'm talking about in this post. Dustin Nguyen. NO! AVENGERS COVERS!

Entry 158: My First GIF

From left to right: Captain MarvelCannonball, Manifold (aka Eden Fesi), Captain America, Hulk, Wolverine, Falcon, Black Widow, Thor, Sunspot, Iron-Man, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman, and Spider-Man. I wish I had put Shang-Chithe 15th member, in there... I'll have an explanation for that later. Also, there are at least 3 more characters who will be on the team... that I know of.

From the dawn of time we came, moving silently down through the centuries. Struggling to reach the time of the gathering, when the few who remain will battle to the last. You've known that we are among you, but until now you haven't known our story. We are the people who are named DUSTIN!

Like the Japanese fighting fish, we Dustins are born enemies of one another. We fight each other for dominance... Not to the death, just till we're tired or something. But the loser of these battles must then change their name from Dustin to JUSTIN, because THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

As you can imagine, along with the tension between Dustins, there is a great deal of tension between Dustins and Justins. These days, many Justins are NOT dishonored Dustins. Many Justins were actually named that by their parents (why? I have no idea). These Justins are intensely competitive with us Dustins. Justins are every bit the enemy to a Dustin that another Dustin is.

So, it was an uneasy alliance when I, Dustin Weaver, teamed with colorist Justin Ponsor to create these three AVENGERS covers. Finally the two powers of "ustin" have been combined!

(I love when I write a post that is entirely bull shit.)
