Entry 87: Please Buy S.H.I.E.L.D. #1

I didn't want to have to do this but... Her name is Lucy Fitzgerald Weaver, she's 7 months, and, other than a nasty headbutt and an ability to latch onto hair and not let go, she is completely helpless. She's a baby who's only mistake is being born the daughter of a comic book artist. She's lost in an unforgiving world where one day is the same as the next. I know you've thought of getting one of her father's comics, put it on a nice to-do list of things to do that are nice, but somehow you never got around to it, even though the comic shop is right there. Maybe you forgot because you were picking your nose, maybe you're stupid, but Lucy doesn't have till the 12th of never or even the 23rd of soon. No, she has only to the first of now. When you buy S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 this Wednesday you'll know she has a school to go to. You'll know she has a doctor to see so she wont DIE like thousands of children did last night. Now I've got your attention. Do something wonderful, buy S.H.I.E.L.D. #1. It's the best thing that can happen to 3 dollars, 3 quarters, 2 dimes, and 4 pinnies. God knows they don't wan to be in your wallet against your ASS. Ever think about that.

Seriously, thanks to anyone who picks up anything that I do. I feel like sometimes I joke or try to play it cool when I've got something coming out, but honestly, it's amazing to me that anyone buys comics that I drew. I'm really grateful that I get to do this for a job.

  1. Dude, why is Ewan MacGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi in the back of a cab in panel 8?!
btw- you're a comic book artist and you had a baby in the normal, biological fashion?! You could have at least cloned yourself/ flooded a sample of your sperm with gamma radiation/ moved to Kansas and waited for an alien baby to earth-fall next to your pickup truck...

  2. Every new piece of art from this makes me want it even more. Breaking my trades-only streak for this one!

  3. Hello from a fan in the Philippines!
Actually...I already prepaid my copy of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 last week (200 pesos here, a large sum actually). I'm just waiting for it to arrive here in my country.
My only complaint is that it's just a oneshot. It should be longer. *sigh*

  4. Sir, where do you sell your original artwork?

  5. I just bought the first issue and your art was one of the first comics in a long time to make me sit up and get really excited. I mean I've seen good art, but rarely does it make me go "Wow!"

  6. Obi-Wan is in there because Lucas ain't done raping your childhood, and if you are going to avoid all things Star Wars he has to find other ways of getting to you.
Oh and I've been trying to make some kind of animal radioactive so that it could bite Lucy but everything dies in the microwave.

  7. Thanks! I hope you were able to get a copy. It sold out! They're doing a second print now.

  8. Judging from this issue, I'd say you're about to have a lot of people picking up books that you draw.
Fantastic stuff. The amount of detail you put into each page is truly a pleasure to view.
Consider me in for the long haul. I'll be pre-ordering every future issue.
I think you & Hickman make a great team.
    Cheers,

  9. Well if you're looking for an animal that can survive microwave radiation, you can't go past either the Cockroach or the Tardigrade (aka Water-Bear). Although they don't bite, so much as chew. But I'm sure it'd be worth it for super-scuttling or super water-retaining powers, respectively!
clearly there is only one way left to stop George Lucas:

  10. Hello to you and the Philippines! The book is actually an ongoing not a one shot. We actually have a 12 issue arc planned. Luckily the rest of the issues wont be as expensive as the first issue because they wont be as long. I hope you like it and feel it was worth your money.

  11. I set up a sight a long time ago now but it hasn't been updated in a long time. I found that trying to sell my work myself was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I'm pretty sure I need to get an art dealer, which I'm planning on doing within the year. Until then, I won't be selling any art. I'll certainly do a post about it once I do start selling.

  12. I was actually very relieved to see that it's not a one shot when I saw those words "To Be Continued". Personally, I don't mind about it being that expensive since I really found it to be a great comic bool (although admittedly, the Night Machine creeped me out). What did concern me at first was that S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 didn't appear in the advance solicitations, but it later popped up for June (I'll be waiting two months *cries*).
Oh, please, please don't put Nick Fury in any time soon. I have to confess I had a difficult time pitching the book to friends because they didn't like Nick Fury. Their loss, but still...
Please do keep up the great work! I just wish I'm not so penniless. I'm such a huge fan of your work that it's my dream to commission you for something. Alas, I'm poverty-stricken. I sincerely hope the sales for S.H.I.E.L.D. would be of immense help to you and your family.

  13. I meant "great comic book" (not bool). This is what usually happens to me when I work at 3 am. *dead*
