Entry 181: Conventions and Signings

Hey, My one French fan, guess who's coming to France?

ME!
That's right! I'm coming to Paris next month for the Comic Con' Paris (July 4-7) and I'm supper excited. I've never been to France. I've barely left the U.S. This is kind of a big deal for me.
So I hope you can make it there to see me, my one French fan, or else I'm just going to be sitting there twiddling my thumbs.
(By the way, are there any French phrases that I really should know... or is it just annoying to hear Americans trying to speak French?)

Anyway, while I'm here I'll also let you know that on
August 17th I'll be at Comic Hero University in Fullerton California for a store signing.

This should be fun. If you're in the L.A/Orange County area please stop by, introduce yourself, I'll sign any books you have, I'll have some prints, and you can possibly get a quick sketch. The address is 140 e. Santa Fe ave. Fullerton, CA 92832
And on September 21-22 I'll be at the Rose City Comic Con in Portland Oregon.
One thing I want to ask:
I'm going to make some prints to sell at these shows. I'm thinking that I'll make a print of my AVENGERS #1-3 cover image, and I'll make a print of my S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 Da Vinci cover. But I'm thinking of making a third print, probably of one of my X-Men covers. I'm wondering which cover it should be. If you feel like it you could check out these covers and let me know in the comments which one you think I should have made into a print.

The image at the top of this entry is of Black Bolt... intense.

    1. Hi, Emilien-- I am taking commission requests. I have your email and I'll be responding to it very soon.
I won't be selling any of my original art pages though. Just some prints and maybe some comics.

I look forward to meeting you there.

  2. Hey !

    Awesome news !

I'm sorry, I don't work in Paris, but in Lyon (2 hours of train) & don't have much of holidays... :-(

But don't worry, a lot of people know your work, you'll have plenty of fans !

No problem to hear american folks speaking french... at last for me. But don't worry if Paris french people react weird, some of them are jack#ss

I don't know how to give you usefull words, because if I write it down, you won't be able to spell it

    1. To bad you wont be able to make it.
I just read that FRANÇOIS BOUCQ will be there! I'm excited about that. I really like his stuff.
This brings up a question I put to you-- While I'm there I'm going to be looking to buy some French comics that I can't find here in the U.S. What should I be looking for? What are the BEST French comics!

    2. Hey !

You must read Mutafukaz ! It's the best French comics for me.

And can you tell me please if it possible to pre-order sketches or commissions for the French Comic-Con ?

      Thanks.

      Eddie

    3. Mmh, I'm a big fan of MutaFukaz but the main part is the story/ambiance which will be slightly harder to catch by someone who can't read French.

If you focus on the art, I would mention anything from Crisse, Gibrat, Florent Maudoux (I'm a big fan of his Freaks squeele series), the whole aquablue series only had great artists, and too many more to list them all.
Ideally, just try and get a bit of free time to get to a shop (a "FNAC" would probably be the easiest to find - you can take the metro 12 from Portes de versailles to Montparnasse to get there) and spend some time exploring their comics section. I guess this would be the best way to get titles that will catch your eye.

And don't be too concerned about meeting people there. It shoudn't be an issue at all :). Well I'll be there at least.

      Cheers
      Mathieu

    4. Thanks, Mathieu and Eddie, for the recommendations. I got back from Paris last week. I'm planning on doing a post all about my trip. Unfortunately for me, I ended up having no time to get any comics. Someone did bring by my table a MutaFukaz book. It looked well done... Anyway, stay tuned for my blog entry about my trip.

    1. I'd love to come to Italy. Does Italy have any conventions I should look into, or comic shops who might want to have me for a signing?

    2. Well, "Lucca Comics & Games", "Romix" and "Cartoomics" are the most important conventions. I don't know how it works for the invitations. Maybe you could contact Paninicomics, the italian editor that publishes all the Marvel titles here, and arrange a meeting for the presentation of the italian edition of Infinity (next year), or for Avengers (issue 1 of the italian edition come out in July).
In my hometown (in the south of Italy) me and some friends gave birth to a little convention (Lamezia Comics & Co) three years ago. During 2013 we'll have our fourth edition, but our budget is REEEEALLY small. For you to visit my hometown... that could be fantastic!!! At least we can cover your trip, hotel and food (I guess :D ). If you're interested I can get some more detailed informations!

    1. I still need to figure out if I can take on any commissions for the Comic University signing. I know they had some people who wanted me to do some sketch covers. I'll have more to say about this soon.

  5. All great images for the 3rd print, but I'd want to own that X-Flag one the most. It's killer.

  6. Excited you're coming to Comic Hero U! Never been to a signing before so I picked up a blank in case you do some sketches.

BTW, I hear you live in PDX. Portland is the coolest city I've ever visited. Salt & Straw Ice Cream and Pine State Biscuits everytime I go!

    1. I've moved around a lot and lived in a variety of places and I have to say that Portland is my favorite place. It is a cool city. And yes, all the good food is a big part of that.
You know I've actually never been to Salt & Straw Ice Cream. I hear it's good. I'll have to go. But I've been to Pine State a lot of times. They recently moved but they used to be just a few blocks from my home. I used to wake up early and walk over there for breakfast... this was before I started watching what I ate.

  9. Regarding some good stuff in French franco belge school over here in France, you really should try "Khaal" by Valentin Sécher, one of the rising star in France. If you crave for Travis Charest work, well this will suit you well.

Sorry I can't make it this year, would have loved to meet you.

    1. Thanks for the recommendations, Julien. Unfortunately for me I didn't get a chance to get any comics while in Paris. I am a big Travis Charest fan, I'll have to check out Khaal some time.
Stay tuned for my full Paris con' report.

  10. I apologize in advance for this comment being off topic to the most recent post but I wanted to make sure you saw it.

Are we gonna need to start a kickstarter campaign in order to get marvel to publish the last two issues of s.h.i.e.l.d.?

Is the delay just a matter of Avengers, New Avengers, and Infinity taking priority or does the marvel editorial department have creative differences over the impact of the conclusion on Marvel Cannon?

I just ask because Kieron Gillen's current run on Iron man ignores the fact that you and Hickman gave Howard Stark the power to psionically reverse engineer and reconstruct machines. In regard to Howard's powers could we assume like Nathaniel Richards not manifesting his time travel ability until s.h.i.e.l.d. that because the flashbacks in gillen's run on Ironman take place a few years before Howard and Nathaniel abandoned their families to pursue Tesla that he just hasn't manifested yet at that point?

S.h.i.e.l.d. portrayed moments of Marvel history that have only been hinted at. I never thought I would see the moment Nathaniel and Howard left. S.h.i.e.l.d is a masterpiece and you should be proud. How a book with such critical praise that even masterfully pulled off a silent issue could be dropped for so long is mind boggling. It is a story that deserves to be read and I sincerely hope you succeed in getting it published.

I bought two copies of every issue but the saying "wait for the Trade" was never before such a painful endeavor.

    1. Sorry for the delay in responding to your question, Nicolas. I really appreciate what you've said about Shield.
I haven't read what Kieron Gillen is doing in Iron Man, but I will say that, Shield, Stark's ability to build machines out of thin air is a mysterious one. He's not the only one who does it. Richards regularly creates guns, and I think it's in issue #1 of volume 2 where you can see Newton doing it. When Michelangelo appears in his room Newton creates a sword using this method. This seems to suggest that this is actually some kind of technology that Shield has, perhaps created by Newton. But all Newton creates is a sword, not a very complex thing, where Stark is designing and creating very elaborate machines right on the spot. This seems to suggest that what makes Stark so special is his ability to invent and fully visualize machines.

As for when we'll be able to finish Shield... I think well be getting to it right after Infinity. As far as I know Marvel isn't concerned over it's impact on Marvel Cannon.

  11. Oh boy. I've been super busy trying to make sure I've got everything done that I need to have done before going to Paris. I really appreciate the comments that I've gotten here. I'm going to go through and respond to each one, but I might not get to it before I go.
Also, if you've emailed me in regards to one of the appearances I mentioned in this post and you haven't heard back from me, I will be getting back to you. I will say that my commission list for Paris is full.
I'm excited. I'll probably have report all about my trip. So look out for that:)

  16. Hello!

I tried e-mailing you a while back about a commission for Rose City, not sure if it went through or not. Don't want to keep bugging you about it, just trying to get everything sorted for the trip down (I'm coming in from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). My request was about the Asgardians - namely Valkyrie and Hela. I can be reached at ErikSveinson(at)shaw(dot)ca, or if you just want to post a reply here, I'd be fine with that. At any rate, look forward to seeing you in September!
