Entry 176: S.H.I.E.L.D. Update #5

As of a week ago S.H.I.E.L.D. Volume 2 #5 is all done. It was almost all done before all the Avengers stuff started. I only had 3 pages to tighten up and ink. But now it's all done...

Of course, you won't get to see it for some time still. Marvel doesn't want to release it until we know we can quickly follow it up with the next and last issue, issue #6. And we won't start working on issue 6 for a while due to Jonathan and my involvement in "INFINITY", the big Marvel summer crossover event.

I know, if you are wanting the end of SHIELD and care less about the Marvel event stuff, it kind of sucks. But believe me, no one is as bothered by it as I am.

I think it's clear that I have put a lot of care and work into SHIELD, and while it sits unfinished, it feels like all of that work was for nothing. It's a depressing feeling, but I've been assured by everyone at Marvel that the plan is to finish SHIELD as soon as we finish up Infinity. So there's that. Plus, I feel good because I think these last two Shield issues are going to be really cool.

How bout some process photos?

You could say these have SPOILERS, but this issue has so much happening in it that I'm not to worried about showing some things.

Before I wrap this up-- thank you to everyone who continues to want to see this series get it's ending. I appreciate the continued interest and I'm encouraged when I meet someone who has gotten into the series since it's hiatus.

And one last thing-- I did an interview/ questionnaire, and you can read it here. Interview

Here's the first page of issue5.

 Blogged and blogged.

    1. That was the one thing on these pages that I wasn't sure I wanted to show, but really it's just the tip of the iceberg.

  2. Any thoughts on the new da Vinci tv show? From the commercials it really looks like they stole some SHIELD ideas much as Once Upon a Time seemed to do ala Fables.

    1. I would be surprised if they were getting any ideas from SHIELD. I think it's just a matter of the creators of it and Hickman and I getting ideas from DaVinci. Just as Hickman and I were not really getting our ideas from Assassins Creed, which people seemed to think we were. We're all just deriving from the source.

As for what I think about the show... I don't know. It looks like it could be alright. I won't end up watching it unless everyone says it's really great. Then, and only then, will I give it a shot.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement. And yes, I really want the final issues of Shield to be extra special to make it up to the fans. And thanks for being my French fan. I'm just glad someone in France likes me.

  4. So, they let you finish book 5, but they're gonna shelve it and prevent you from working on the final issue with assurances that they "plan" to wrap things up after the Infinity event, even though SHIELD has been going on for years now and has been outlined for however long you've been inking three pages. You'll have to forgive me if this all sounds terribly, and somewhat deliberately vague. It's cool, Marvel editor's best stories are the ones they make up to mask their totally inept organization and scheduling. I'm sorry this has been difficult. Along with Hickman's Feel Better Now and Secret, these unfinished projects are becoming a bit of a turd atop the delicious spaghetti dinner that's been his career as of late. Thanks for showing what you can, it's all very exciting. This art tells a compelling story of a talented man trapped in a chaotic shit show. Hope it all works itself out.

    1. Boy that was a pointless comment. Hard to call Feel Better Now "unfinished" when it never actually started. Announced does not equal started. Do you have any idea how many books are announced each year and never come out? Dozens. It happens all the time, deal with it. And it was made pretty clear by Hickman that the problem with all the Secret delays was with the artist, not him or Image. How can you blame him when the artist wouldn't finish the pages? Maybe you should get your facts straight before you comment in the future.

    2. Wow, that totally explained why SHIELD still isn't coming out before another EARTH SHATTERING MARVEL EVENT THAT WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING(before they change it all back). I mean, it didn't actually explain anything, but why focus on the main point of Marvel editorial being elusive, disorganized asshats as usual when we can all just fall back on "shit happens," right? Talk about stuff that happens all the time. Excuse me, I'll be off in the corner dealing with it.

    3. :) You guys don't know how excited I am to actually have a real internet argument happening on my blog. Usually my blog comments are just someone saying, "great job," then me saying, "thanks." Some real anger and aggression is so much more exciting. It really feels like I'm actually on the internet now.

Anyway, to address what you guys are talking about, I really wouldn't blame Marvel for Shield not happening sooner. I blame the popularity of Hickman. If Hickman wasn't so popular Marvel wouldn't have offered him the driver's seat to the Marvel Universe. And when you get offered that driver's seat it's probably really hard to turn it down. But that seat is a lot of work. Do you know how many books Hickman is writing each month? A lot! I don't know how he's doing as much as he's doing. The fact that his more personal projects are suffering for it is no surprise to me. If I were him I'd be feeling like I'd bitten off more than I could chew.

I agreed to go along for the ride with Hickman For Avengers and Infinity because they're both big opportunities, but more importantly, no one would want me to do Shield without him.

I appreciate your passion. I encourage it. Hoist the flag. I am with you in your anger. Proud brothers, do not fret. The bus will get you there yet. To carry us to the lake. The club is open.

    1. Hey thanks!
Mostly they want their best writer on their flagship books. Hickman has just been bringing me along;) I'm only partially kidding. I do really appreciate the comment.

  7. Many thanks for the updates! I just discovered S.H.I.E.L.D and loved it. As I do all Hickmans work!
But there's 1 thing with this book that makes it even better, it's the visuals. Fantastic work guys!!
Can't wait for the conclusion, is there any timeframe at all?

Sorry if my english is inperfect, I'm from sweden… take care and say hi to Hickman from me!! ;-)

    1. Your English is good! And I really appreciate your comment.
As far as a timeframe-- I'm not sure. I'm thinking we will have both issues 5 and 6 out this year. I wish I could be more specific, but I just don't know. As of right now, it seems certain that we'll be all done within the year.

  8. Thanks for doing so much with SHIELD and for posting these updates. SHIELD is one of those titles that gets me to rush to the comic shop as soon as it hits the shelves. It feels good to know that you're as invested in finishing this series as I am in reading it.

  9. What an epic work of art, and story telling!

My favorite was the pigeon. I could not believe that the "love" of Nicola Tesla was actually transcribed unto art. This was recomended to me by my brother, and I am currently enjoying the Avengers/Infinity series, but this was trully an amazing feat.
Thank you Dustin, Jonathan, Sonia, ...and Marvel(even though they stunted the publication date)for presenting our founding fathers of science as the super heroes that they are.

I hope #5 and #6 are out soon.

Comic books taught me english and french in a span of two years when I was 7 years of age. Now at 33 it brings awe and sparks my imagination. Everything Nicola Tesla was able to bring unto the world. The father of our electromagnetic age.

  10. I understand that comic book writers and artists take this genre of super-hero comics and try to elevate it. Most of the time, these characters and stories are only modeled for mass production, to wet the lips as they say. Hickman/Weaver, I am proud to say that SHIELD has risen to the levels of Alejandro Jodorowsky and Jean Giraud(Moebius). To take something that Marvel itself has subdued in shadowy disinterest and acceptace/compliance for decades(SHIELD), and make of it an immersive explosion of storytelling and eye-candy...

To be able to open a mind at any age with your arts is a gift.

    Thank you.

Looking forward to #5 and #6

  11. Coming late to this thread, and a little worried that "Anonymous" may be a hive mind with many voices, while I wait to be submerged again I can only say: love the story, love the artwork, hope #5 and #6 see the daylight. Come on Marvel, let the meisterwerk be completed...

  12. I recently went back and reread all of the SHIELD books that are out. Good Gods I forgot how amazing this series is. Your work on Avengers and Infinity keep impressing me as well. Hope you can finish up issue 6 shortly. I mean, if The Twelve can wrap up, so can this.

  13. Ah.....i bought the SHIELD AoF whitout knowing there was a "second" part so i was Reading this great story (with a lot of flashbacks.....) and then i keep my Reading with many doubts......and THEEEENNNNNN "end of volumen one"...............................

    so i

web the web, and found there was a one shot, and 4 of 6 of that second volumen, but those 4 where from months ago, and the 5 and 6 got hold until now? wow is this dead? i never read the other ones (except volumen one) cuz i like to read comics on HC or TPB (specially that here in Peru there aren´s comics stores) so to avoid from ordering singles and singles, i wait for the TPB or HC, but is there is going to be a HC of this? (at this rate i dont think so) and dont tell me it will be a volumen 3 LOL

is not i dont want, is that......imagine, vol 2 on 2015, volumen 3 on 2022........OMG (and the director wants 10 volumes jaja)

    Anywa nice work there

    1. First-- Thanks so much for reading the first volume!
Second-- There WILL be a second volume and then it will be done. No third volume. The story wraps up at the end of volume 2.
I'm not sure how long it will take for use to do the last issue. But I think I'll be starting it soon. We'll see. Marvel wants me to keep doing work for them and I'm contractually bound to them. But I've told them that I'm really only interested in finishing Shield. Right now. I'm just waiting for Jonathan to find the time to write the last issue.
I say hang in there. A second volume will come soon.

    2. To be honest i was Reading part 6 of 6 of the first volumen and it was like 8 pages to the end i told myself "ammm this can be all explained in a few pages" so i stopped, google and found about a "one-shot" and 4/6 and the "hold the line" so i returned to the HC (yep i bought the oversized HC) and i spoiled myself (cuz i went to the last page of the 6 comic) and say Michelangelo, so i told myself "the fack....." Is like read Lord of the Rings and Tolkien never writted the last book jaja.

I can wait (even up to the 2022) i just wanted to know if this was still on work, hopefully i found this page (web fórums dont help, they talk nonsenses), to me, this story is as good and fascinating as Marvel 1602, is like Reading something different to the usual (avengers, ultimates, etc) Here in Peru (hi there i´m from Peru) there is not a Real comic shop, just 3 or 4 places but sell comics, like 6 times what i can pay on ebay (ex one comic in USA: $3 o4 ? here is like $8) and dont tell me "we need to pay taxes" becouse i buy all my comics (singles, TPB and HC) from the Web and even paying shipping is way too cheap.

Is sad to know that here, comics are not so fomented, there is a newspaper that can print Marvel comic (has some licenses) but just tittles like spiderman, iron man, some of avengers, batman, x men etc, but just arcs from 2005 to now, and dont think "hey that´s good" in 3 or 4 years this is going, i asume no more tan 300 comics where printed, they sold 2 to 3 comics per week, compared what there in USA is sold.

even do, when they print something i already had lol, and i preffer english, text, comics and paper qualitty, we are going to have an event this week called Lima Comics but it´s like.......all the minor stores, fanzines and things that dont come to the theme, teleport there, imagine civil war TPB is $50 LOL

So if you take your time i can wait, just one more question, is there is going to be a TPB or HC when all is finished? i think is 1-6 and maybe the will include the one shot? (or read wrong on the web) cuz i dont read online comics or download them, i preffer printed things :D. So thanks for the answers Dustin, keep the work (words from one of the few in this country that preffer orginal and buy original) hey i´m not rich but i buy what i can and that counts jeje.

      Talk with you later.

      Benjamin

  15. Ok, so here it is 2017, and I can't find anything about the continuation of this series. I think it's one of the very best runs I've read in a long time. So as this blog is pretty old does anyone know if it's really gonna happen?

    ReplyDelete
  16. What is going to happen is that we will keep this blog alive until they publish the HC, after that, it would be an urban legend jeje

  17. Ok, well, I went back and re-read this whole series, for the second time in one day, and that is because I just can't believe it so good. I have to say it's my favorite story thus far. I got Marvel Unlimited about four(maybe five months ago. I've been reading quite a lot. I just can't believe it just ended. I'm talking specifically about the S.H.I.E.L.D. 2011 run. I pictured Spielberg directing something like this. It's incredibly amazing. I mean all of it, every aspect, the art, the writing, the characters. Then after the 4th issue it just ends, so abruptly. It just isn't fair!!! I'm begging, please what happened, I mean I know, but how could they just let it die!?!? Is there something I'm missing? I know Hickman went to other runs and all, and even some of issue 5 & 6 were worked on and it was said it was going to some out in 2015, but where is it? Is it somewhere else, under a different name? Any direction would be greatly appreciated. I just can't believe something so spectacularly good would just end without some closure. .... also, if there's anything out there similiar to this that anyone might think I'd enjoy, that'd be really great too! I'm now reading 1602, and then am going to move onto Gaiman's Immortals. ..... so again in advance, thank you, anyone who can give any clue as to what happened or is going to hopefully happen!!! Thanks!!!!

  18. Wow thank you so very much Dustin for getting back to me... I have to say man, that there is some very VERY special about this series. It is so mysterious and cryptic. I'm talking about your art and in the very best way possible. The tattoos, the steampunk-ish contraptions, the gun that separated- held together by magnetism(or perhaps it just coming together in mid air, which is what I thought at first, and I am most likely wrong, but haven't seen it completely together) Anyhow, all the art is mind blowing. I got Marvel Unlimited only because before I got it I spend $400 on buying the digital comics in less than a month and didn't even realize it. Like a lot of people, I ended up reading Hickman's books because lets face it, he's tops too. Anyhow, back o subject at hand. I don't know how many people out there are in the same boat as me, in that when I got to the last page of issue #4, turned the page to open #5 (in MU) and it wasn't there, I was stunned. I thought the app was glitchy. But then I went into the regular Marvel app where you buy single issues and that was the last one in the series too. My heart sank. I know that may sound pathetic to some and others may say "oh god man get over it already, it's never coming out." Well, I can't believe that. Right at the pinnacle of probably the best story I've come across in all of Marvel thus far(IMHO) it just goes no further?!?! "There's no way whoever was involved in this would let that happen, there's too much heart, soul and imagination invested into this story," I thought to myself. So all day yesterday I scoured the internet to see if there was an explanation which of course led me here. So, again, thank you so very VERY much for responding and letting me know I'm not crazy, and it wasn't in fact released yet. Man, this is some story, I think it deserves a documentary. Wouldn't that be something? Ha! So lemme speak for all the ones out there that haven't found solace for the missing 5-6 issues.
This is one of the most very special stories in the Marvel universe. It's full of heart, powerfully inspirational, and I will go to my grave wanting. If this never gets released there will be a hole, an itch the will never be scratched. I will be anticipating and checking back everyday in MU to see if it's there.
Again Dustin, thank you. I actually got the Tumblr app last night only because of the link you posted but also to take a look at some of your work. Splendid man, wow, you just garnered yourself a die hard fan. As you can see I can go on and on and on about this so I'm just gonna plug it here...however, I have these two additional updates now and couldn't find them before. It was late last night when I read them too, so I'm gonna go back and re-read them so I can know clearly what's going on. Where can I look to find the most recent updates in the future? For the 10th and final time, thank you for taking the time and filling this fan (and hopefully many many others) with hope of closure and an end, or continuation!?!?!- to one of the greatest Marvel stories ever!
