Entry 110: ECCC commissions

Emerald City is now over. I survived. It was rough, but I made it through. And it's back to real work now.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and said hi. I signed a lot of Shield books and a lot of people had some really great things to say about the book. I really appreciated all the kind words.

I'm sorry to anyone who came up and wanted a sketch or a commission that couldn't get one because I was booked up. That's the first time that's happened to me. This was the first show where I actually had to make a real commission list. In fact, I over booked myself and I now have to get a few of those commissions done at home. I'm really sorry to you guys who have to wait a little longer.

Anyway, enough jibber jabber, to the art.

Here are a bunch of commissioned pieces I did get done. Most are pictures of the piece at the show. A few of them (like the one above) are scans.
That's it for now. I'll post the last couple pieces once I've done them.

Thanks again everyone.

  1. Awesome! Your Captain America is almost as sexy as the Chris Evans version :) Love DaVinci (I can never look at him now without thinking of season 5 of FUTURAMA!) and wow, Wolverine needs a band-aid :)

  2. Good Lord...Those are convention sketches??!!!!
It's amazing you can put that much detail into them with all of the con-going distractions. More power to you, man!
BTW, "They'll Bury You Where You Stand" did not disappoint.
    Suspenseful & disturbing.
I loved the contrast in rendering between the Angel & the townspeople.
I noticed you colored it yourself - thought the choices there were spot on.
Really beautiful to look at - If such a word applies to this story.
And, dude...It just screams for a sequel - or prequel.
As to which movie may have influenced the look of the townspeople...the only one that comes to mind right now is The Road, probably because that's the last movie I saw that was genuinely disturbing to me.
It's probably something older than that, though.
You seemed to have a very natural command of the Western setting.
Would love to see you get a crack @ Jonah Hex or a Marvel western character somewhere down the line.
    Really great stuff all-around.

  3. Wait a second- I was there, I saw these things taking shape- but somehow I still can't believe it. How did you do this? These are amazing!
Folks- nobody- NOBODY puts backgrounds in their convention sketches- and we're not talking, like, generic rubble or anything. You've got pirate ships, WWII Mustangs... You're incredible man!
That DaVinci up top turned out awesome- I love the shading and the detail. And the Wolverine- did I see that? I remember seeing a Wolverine but I don't remember that piece. I guess I was distracted by convention madness. It's an instant classic- so painful!
Sometimes I forget how awesome you are.

  5. i liked that Futurama episode. Ever since I started working on Shield I've payed attention to every comic book or cartoon version of Da Vinci I come across. I think, at some point I'll do a post about them all.

  6. Thanks a lot for the feed back on TBYWYS. This is actually the first bit of feed back I've gotten. So it means a lot to me.
I haven't seen The Road. I'll have to check it out. The movie that I got a lot of the faces from is The Man Who Laughs, which, of course, was the inspiration for the Joker. There are a lot of other weird looking people in that movie. If you watch it you might be able to pick out the townspeople.
And yes, I could absolutely see doing a prequel. When Jeremy and I were first talking about doing a western I told him an idea I had for a western graphic novel. I wasn't sure if the idea was much use to us because it was so long, but Jeremy was able to tweak it and work it together with what he had in mind. Ultimately, this story could be seen as the end of a much longer story. Maybe someday we'll get to tell that story.
Thanks again for the the comments and for picking up the book.

  7. Commission
These are unbelievable. I've never seen such breathtaking commissions. I need a commission from you Dustin. Do you take commission requests outside of cons and if not are you attending any other convention, if so I might have to go just to get a commission from you.

  8. Hey Dustin, as one of the guys who is having to wait a little bit longer, I just want to say that I really appreciate you taking the time to do the commission from home. Based on these incredible pieces I know it will definitely be worth the wait and there's no need to apologize.

And being a Leonardophile is never a bad thing!

  10. Thanks, dude. That cheers me up. As you know some of these I had the sketch prepared before the show. That pirate ship was a completely different sketch that I printed into this sketch in blue line and then just inked. And the Mustangs were added in after the show once I got home. I wanted to draw them in during the show but I didn't have the reference and I wanted them to look right. I'm capable of pulling a lot of things out of my ass on the spot but not those things.
If I had a smart phone with internet access at conventions and could get all the reference I wanted, oh the crazy commissions I would do. It would probably get out of hand.
As I was finishing that Da Vinci I was very conscious of the fact that you liked it when it was just a gray silhouette. As I went in with more detail, I was afraid that you'd think I was ruining it. I'm glad you like it.
The Wolverine I did once I got home. It's kind of an homage to Silvestri's Uncanny X-men 234 cover.

  12. Re: Commission
Thanks, man. I almost never do commissions from home, but if you e-mail me, I mark your e-mail and when I have some spare time I can contact you and see if your still interested.
I do think I'll be going to the con in New York this year. That's about all I know at this point.
